Chelsea Clinton speaks about college affordability during Roanoke College event

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Election Day is 54 days away and the race for the White House is heating up. Both sides are revving up efforts to appeal to voters.

Donald Trump was in Ohio as Hillary Clinton continued to recover from pneumonia. Her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, stepped in to campaign and was in Southwest Virginia speaking at Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon. Chelsea's speech focused on college affordability.

"Education should not be viewed as a consumer product and income and zip code should not determine your educational opportunities," said Clinton.

Chelsea talked about core parts of her mother's college compact plan which includes lower interest rates and debt forgiveness.

"Your service itself should count to help you pay down your loans. So if you're a teacher and you're in a high need area or a doctor in a high need area or working in legal aid, that service itself should count as paying off your loans" she said.

Students at the event said they were concerned about paying off student loans when they graduate. Clinton said education should not be viewed as a consumer product and income and zip code should not determine educational opportunities.

"I thought it was informative" said Dara Goodman. "It is frightening to know that once I graduate college I will have to pay off all these loans. Hearing what she (Chelsea Clinton) had to say was very reassuring to me."

Hillary Clinton's doctor released a statement Wednesday stating that the presidential candidate is "health" and "fit to serve". Campaign aides said Hillary is expected to be back on the campaign trail on Thursday.
