Vinton town council gets first look at rezoning plans for old William Byrd High School

VINTON (WSLS 10) - Plans are coming together to make the old William Byrd High School in Vinton a home to dozens of people.

The historic building will be converted into high-end apartments. Developers are looking to build up to 90 units.

Because the school is on the historic registry, the auditorium cannot be turned into residential space, which is why certain parts of the old school will likely be used for recreation or entertainment.

On Tuesday night, the Vinton town council heard plans for mixed-use rezoning for the first time. Council is expected to vote on the rezoning request in the next few weeks.

A planning commission public hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Town council will hold one later in September.

Developers are hoping to break ground by March 2017 on the $9 million project.
