Rockbridge County's new Fire and EMS chief named

LEXINGTON (WSLS 10) – Rockbridge County Administrator Spencer Suter announced today the County's new Chief of Fire and EMS.

Nathan Ramsey, a county native, was chosen out of more than 40 candidates. He started his career in Fire and EMS with the South River Volunteer Fire Department and has also served with Fairfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.

He holds advanced certifications in firefighter leadership and training, and is a nationally registered paramedic who has worked with Carilion for over 15 years.

"We were fortunate to have an excellent slate of candidates for the position," noted Suter.  "However, Nathan's combination of field and leadership experience, as well as his vested desire to help his native County move in a positive direction made him a natural choice."   Prior to becoming certified as a Paramedic, Ramsey completed the necessary coursework through the Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke and has also earned an Associate's Degree in Fire Sciences from Columbia Southern University.  He is certified to the level of Fire Officer IV through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.

Ramsey says he is looking forward to his new role in Rockbridge. "I started off as a young child riding a bike behind the South River Volunteer Firehouse, watching the members respond to calls.  From the first time I left the building on an emergency call, I knew that this was going to be my vocation.  To be able to step into a leadership role in my home County is a dream that has come full circle.  I look forward to working with Volunteers, administration, the Board and citizens to move the service ahead together

He will begin his service in Rockbridge on September 26.
