Christiansburg teacher named state finalist for Presidential Excellence Award

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - Six Virginia teachers have been selected as state finalists for the 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Kathleen O'Dell, a math teacher at Christiansburg Middle school in Montgomery County, is one of the finalists.This award recognizes teachers who develop and implement high-quality instructional programs that improve student learning.

The five other 2016 Virginia state finalists, public school teachers in grades K-6, are as follows:

  • Cari Del Fratte of Charles Barrett Elementary, Alexandria, for mathematics
  • Carolyn Harlow of Clover Hill Elementary, Chesterfield County, for science
  • Jerome Peck of Seneca Ridge Middle, Loudoun County, for science
  • Melonie Yielding of Ellis Elementary, Prince William County, for science
  • Julia Young of Deep Creek Elementary, Chesapeake, for science

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House.

Each year, the award alternates between teachers in grades K-6 and teachers in grades 7-12.

The Virginia finalists were selected from among more than 80 nominees by committees convened by the Virginia Department of Education.

The 2016 winners will be announced by the President next year, and the winners will receive $10,000, a presidential certificate and a trip to the nation's capital.
