Group says resources exist to curb Danville's gun violence

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - With Saturday's shooting in the Buffalo Wild Wings' parking lot, it's been six weeks since the last weekend passed without someone being shot or killed in Danville.

"It is very frustrating because you have a ton of resources here in Danville," said Nicholas Sturdifen, LifePush's president.

LifePush is just one of those resources created specifically to help people deal with problems, but Sturdifen said people are not taking advantage of the resources. If they were, he believes a lot of the violence could be prevented.

"If we don't get this thing right, crime will grow and crime will spread," Sturdifen emphasized. "That's when you're going to have an even bigger issue than what we're ready to handle."

Even so, the organization stresses that prevention needs to start in the home, specifically with parents getting more involved in their children's lives.

"A lot of young people are lacking self-esteem. Because that self-esteem is lacking, there's a lack of security and there's also a lack of identity," said Alvis Williams, LifePush's gang prevention director.

He encourages parents to remind their children that resources like LifePush exist and he encourages parents to communicate with their children as much as possible, as this can help prevent children from getting involved in gang violence and ultimately help reduce crime.

"What type of music are they listening to, monitor their social media, monitor their friends, their peers, who they're hanging around with. Monitor their clothing," continued Williams.

As of Monday, police had not released the name of Saturday's shooting victim or what led to the shooting.
