Roanoke College welcomes freshman with helping hand

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Saturday was move in day for students at Roanoke College as hundreds of freshman start their college career and explore downtown Salem.

Cars filled with boxes lined the streets around campus as mom and dad helped unpack their students boxes in the dorm rooms.

The class of 2020 represents 29 states and includes 21 international students.

They were welcomed by upperclassman who were there to help them get to orientation as well as lend a hand with heavy lifting.

One of those helping is Senior Tyler Messic. He says upperclassman welcomed him with a smile on his first day three years ago. He has helped other freshman ever since.

"It's a lot of energy, it's awesome. It's a lot of fun to see all new faces and just help give freshman moving in a familiar face and be friendly and make things easy for them and just kind of do everything we can to help."

Also, among the newest Roanoke class are 14 class presidents, 13 eagle scouts, nine newspaper editors and 154 national honor society participants.

Monday is the first full day of classes for all Roanoke College students.
