Roanoke police add more diversity in senior ranks

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Four Roanoke police officers were promoted Friday, making the department more diverse at the senior ranking levels than it has ever been.

Samuel Roman became deputy chief and Chester Smith is now a captain. This marks the first time two African-Americans have held these positions in the Star City.

Jamey Bowdel was also promoted to lieutenant, and Britten Corker became a sergeant.

Police Chief Tim Jones said diversity in both leadership and recruitment is crucial for police departments across the country.

The Roanoke Police Department will now look to fill vacancies left by these promotions.
