Grayson County volunteers save schools more than $175,000 for renovations

GRAYSON COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Grayson County schools may have had financial troubles last year, but with a new superintendent in place, there have been a lot of changes.

Leaders say the maintenance staff has gone above and beyond its duties to help renovate the schools.

Grayson County Schools Superintendent Kelly Wilmore said that throughout the summer, maintenance workers took their time to paint the walls inside the school gym, the cafeteria and put down new flooring for the locker rooms.

Wilmore said the biggest help came from volunteers who helped demolish the football stadium's condemned bleachers.

"It's good. As a student you can feel proud of the school you go to you know, when you look at it, it builds encouragement as a student and athlete," football player Adam Carrico said.

Wilmore said to hire painters would have to cost about $75,000 to $100,000 and to hire people to tear down the condemned bleachers would have cost more than $100,000.

He said he's glad to have a team willing to come and help out to make sure there's a facility for school functions, like football games.

"It's exciting, it's almost stunning to walk out here now, when they had the dirt piles a few months ago, I wasn't sure what it was going to look like,"  Brett McPhearson, head football coach said.
