Roanoke city school buses require safety checks

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Now that school is back in session for many, thousands of students across Southwest Virginia will get on a school bus this morning. Parents want to know that the bus their child is riding on is safe.

Mountain Valley Transportation operates the school buses for Roanoke City. There a list of things that drivers check every day, including checking fluids, brakes and lights as well as making sure the seats are secure.

An extra feature they've added to the buses are green tabs on all of the lug-nuts.

Arne Stensaker of Mountain Valley Transportation says, "Those are indicators if a lug-nut is getting loose. Those little green things will dial up. So these are things we do to make sure safety is the number one issue."

In addition to the daily checks, all buses are required by the state to undergo an extensive inspection every 45 days or 5,000 miles.
