ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Today is national dog day, a celebration of man's best friends and encouraging people to adopt a dog.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the first year of dog ownership can cost about $1,300 for a smaller dog and up to $1,800 for a larger breed.
This includes one-time expenses such as spaying and neutering, initial medical fees, and buying a crate.
After the first year, it calculates the cost drops to about $580 to $875 per year.

- 52% of dog owners take their dogs on car trips at least once per week
- 24% of people have used their dogs to flirt with another person while in their cars
- 66% of owners think about their dog's needs when buying a car
