Racing Set to Return to VIR

ROANOKE (WSLS 10 SPORTS) -

Another full weekend of racing is approaching us. The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, kicks off Friday at the Virginia International Raceway.

There will be a number of races featuring various makes and models such as Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porshe. The Mazda MX-5 Cup will also run and that's where you'll find Charlottesville native Sam Barnett. The former Virginia Tech Hokie has 68 race wins and more than 100 podium finishes. He and other drivers say that VIR offers a very unique racing experience.

"There's lots of cars that have a lot more power but these cars are so nimble they're so predictable. The race car only weighs 2,100 pounds whereas a typical sedan weighs around 3,500 pounds so you're talking a significant reduction", said Barnett.

"This is one of those tracks where you really need to just gain confidence it's really fast it's dangerous but exciting and it's one of those tracks you go to build up to", said pro racer Ryan Briscoe.
