Averett University building on-campus health center

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Averett University is getting a health care center.

The center will be built in what is now the student rec center.

It is being paid for by donations and by Danville Regional Medical Center, whose doctors and nurses will work in the center.

Students will be able to get almost any kind of care at the health center that they could receive at an off-campus doctor's office.

The university's dean of students, Lesley Villarose, says parents and students have been asking for this.

"When students would come to us, they would express the need for having a student health center. When we're at our Cougar Preview Days, parents want to know 'if my son or daughter is not feeling well how are you going to help them get the care they need?'" Villarose said.

Villarose added that currently there are no plans to build a new rec center on campus, which is why the university has partnered with the YMCA to offer students a yearly membership for $25.

The health center is expected to be ready by January 2017.
