Floyd County schools close early for third day due to heat

FLOYD (WSLS 10) - The summer heat has caused school to get off to a slow start in the New River Valley.

Floyd County schools dismissed students at about noon Wednesday for the third day in a row, out of only five school days this year.

The county has five schools, none of which have air conditioning throughout the entire building.

Superintendent Kevin Harris said that Wednesday, classrooms at Floyd Elementary School were 90 degrees by 8 a.m.

"From the moment we walk in, it's kind of oppressive and you just kind of feel it," said fourth-grade teacher Heather Vickers.

The county is now looking at plans to either renovate or build new school buildings with air conditioning. Leaders said this is likely several years away.
