Box Tops for Education helping local students

ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) - Items you have in your home could help support kids in the classroom.

You will find Box Tops for Education tabs on all kinds of General Mills products.

Each one of those tops is worth ten cents.  Schools can get up to $20,000 each year for collecting them.

Many schools in southwest Virginia collect the box tops to buy school supplies or to reduce the cost of field trips.

Students at Green Valley Elementary in Roanoke County get to have a little fun if they collect enough.  "If students collect six thousand box tops over the summer, then they will be able to turn me into a human sundae at our fun run in October," said principal Ashley McCallum.

In the past, when students have collected a lot of box tops, McCallum has let students duct tape her to the wall and they got to watch her and the assistant principal race around the track on a tricycle.

Green Valley received more than $2,000 last year from collecting the box tops.
