VINTON (WSLS-10 SPORTS) -For many teams, ending the season with a winning record typically means the post season, but that wasn't the case for the Terriers. They went 6-4 in 2015 but missed the playoffs due to the strength of their opponents and a highly contested 4A West region. Coach Jeff Highfill is entering his 36th year at William Byrd and says the message to his team following last season was a positive one.
"I think we were competing with some of the best teams in the state again and I think the kids felt good about that. Honestly we wish we'd been in the playoffs, And the playoff thing, I think it could be a little frustrating as yet but you can make the playoffs had been any other region we would have--the only reason it only took 12 teams, " explains Terriers Coach Jeff Highfill.
This season the Terriers are poised to put their print on the postseason. Among those returning on offense is top dog Larry Basham. The conference 24 player of the year has rushed for more than 29-hundred yards in two years but hopes to contribute to the team in more roles on offense as well as at the safety position.
"It feels good, I really have played two positions my whole life, so it would be nice to get back to doing that again," says Terrier back Larry Basham.
Many of the Terriers players know what it takes to bounce back from a losing season just two years ago. But now the key is to not only repeat a winning season but add a playoff appearance as well.
"I think most of this group was with that group that went 3-7 then 6-4. So now are they willing to take the next step. That's what we're looking to see," says Highfill.
William Byrd opens up against Cave spring at Bogle Stadium on the 26th.
