Roanoke County school gets new playground

ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) - The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that elementary and middle school students get 150 minutes per week of physical fitness, which averages out to thirty minutes per day.

To help students meet that requirement, Green Valley Elementary School in Roanoke County is getting a new playground to replace its old one.

Part one of the playground was installed last year with construction now underway on part two.

The money for the new equipment came from the P.T.A., the school board and the students.  "We've had different fundraisers," said principal Ashley McCallum.  "We even had a change jar in the front office that kids would donate their space change, their ice cream money.  It really has been a total team effort."

The third phase of the project will come in the future with landscaping, pavers and picnic tables being added so that the students and the community can use it.
