Day 5: Beach volleyball preview

NBC Olympics.com – Day 5 of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament will see preliminary play for women's pools B, C and F, and men's pools A, B and F, come to a close.

USA's Gibb/Patterson will highlight the morning session matches as they take on Spain's Herrera/Gavira at 10:00 a.m. ET. Pool F is wide open with all teams holding one win and one loss. The U.S. men will need to win their match in order to pull ahead as one of the top two teams from their pool to advance to the Round of 16.

Alison and Bruno Schmidt will take to the sands in the first match of the afternoon session at 12:00 p.m. ET. The top-seeded Brazilians fell in a stunning upset to Austria's Doppler/Horst 23-21, 16-21, 15-13. They play Italy's Carambula/Ranghieri in their third and final group play match.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross will play Switzerland's Forrer/Verge-Depre at 8:00 p.m. ET. Walsh Jennings and Ross swept their first two matches and are all but guaranteed to move into the Round of 16.

Pool play for men's pools C, D and E, as well as women's pools A, D and E will conclude on Aug. 11. The Round of 16 will begin at 10:00 a.m. ET on Aug. 12.
