DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Danville Parks and Rec Department has a new art competition designed to encourage people to get outside and to help the department reach out to teens.
Ninth through 12th graders are being asked to create a piece of art, like a painting or a sculpture, about what they love to do most and submit the piece to the city's parks and rec department.
Any student in those grades can participate, he or she does not have to be from Danville.
On September 11, the art will be displayed on the Riverwalk Trail where the dam used to be, near Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
A judge will review the art and prizes will be given out to the artists accordingly.
"There aren't as many programs available for teens right now, either from parks and recreation or other parts of the city as well, and we feel like that's a really key time in children's' lives; a very developmental stage for them," said Morgan Kerns with the Danville Parks and Rec Department. "We want the teens in our city to feel supported by the city."
The department is encouraging the teens to accompany their artwork on the 11th to talk to people about the art.
Any 9-12th graders who play musical instruments are also being sought for September 11 to play their instruments to showcase the musical talent of local teens.
Artwork has to be submitted by September 9. It can be dropped off at the parks and rec department's office at 125 Floyd Street, or you can call Kerns at the office, 434-799-5150, and schedule a time for the art to be picked up.
