Pulaski working to protect seniors from crime

PULASKI COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Pulaski County is working to prevent crime targeting seniors.

The attorney general's office is partnering with local communities, police and seniors to get information out about current scams and strategies to prevent crime and help seniors protect themselves.

Attorney General Mark Herring was in Pulaski on Tuesday as the community signed on to the Virginia TRIAD to reduce crime against the elderly.

Herring said seniors are often targets because they're perceived as more vulnerable.

He stressed the importance of what he calls the 24-hour rule.

"Wait 24 hours. Talk to someone you trust, talk to law enforcement, call our consumer protection office to find out if it's legitimate or not. If it is, they'll wait 24 hours. If it's not, it can save seniors a lifetime of hard work and heartache," said Herring.

The Pulaski County Regional TRIAD is made up of law enforcement and local agencies including the NRV agency on aging and social services.
