Museum honoring Lynchburg African-American history

LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Museum workers in Lynchburg are honoring African-American history.

The Lynchburg Museum is collecting memorabilia from Dunbar High School alumni.

As part of its First Friday event, the museum will show items such as majorette's uniforms and pictures of Dunbar High School before it closed.

Museum staff say the school was a hub for African-American culture in the Hill City.

"It's special to me because I actually taught history there when it was a middle school after the high school had integrated some of the teachers stayed on so I got to work with some of the people who had been there," explained museum director Douglas Harvey.

The collection will be on display Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continues throughout the weekend.
