Danville murder suspect shot and killed in South Carolina

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The 22-year-old man wanted in connection to a murder in Danville on Sunday was shot and killed by police in South Carolina early Tuesday morning.

Richard Lance London, 22, was wanted in connection to the death of 80-year-old Melvin Eugene Powell, of Danville.

London was wanted on an outstanding probation violation and was entered into the National Crime Information Center as a wanted person and an armed homicide suspect.

At about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, officers with the Lake City South Carolina Police Department attempted to stop the Mercury driven by London.

Police say that after a short pursuit along a heavily traveled portion of U.S. Highway 52, London stopped the car and exited firing a handgun at the officers.

He was subsequently shot and later died at an area hospital.

This all started when on Sunday evening, Danville officers responded to 23 Elizabeth Street where they found Powell dead with visible signs of violent injury.

By that point, police say London had already driven away in the Mercury that he stole.

At this time, police say, there are no other suspects in the murder of Melvin Powell.

The Danville Police Department has exhausted all information on next of kin for Powell.

Anyone having knowledge of living relatives of Melvin Powell is requested to call 434-799- 6508.
