Auto theft rates increase in Southwest Virginia

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Auto theft is on the rise in Southwest Virginia. According to the 2015 Crime in Virginia Report by Virginia State Police, the numbers increased by ten-percent.

The report says, per 100,000 people, Danville reported 76 break-ins, Lynchburg reported 78 and Roanoke reported 183.

There were 8,103 offenses reported across the Commonwealth in total.

July had the greatest number of thefts last year, while February had the least.

According to the report, most thefts happen while you're at home, and general property crimes happen about every two minutes.

The annual list of top stolen vehicles in the U.S. was released from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Overall, the report finds that in 2015, the 1996 Honda Accord was the most stolen car with 52,244 stolen.
