Roanoke City Schools in need of school supplies

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Roanoke City Schools have a high poverty rate with around 76-percent of students qualifying for free or reduced lunches.

"We really do need school supplies desperately. One of the big shortages year after year has been backpacks," said Dr. Rita Bishop, Roanoke City School Superintendent. "We have many students who don't have that joy that you and I had. We get to go with our moms and pick out all of next year's school supplies. All the pretty new things that are out for the new school season. Our students, many of them just don't have that kind of experience."

Dr. Bishop says by giving students school supplies it is also saying "we believe in you" and leveling the playing field for students who may not be able to afford everything needed.

You can donate to the 10 Cares McDonalds School Supplies Drive now through August 7th.
