LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Lynchburg guidance counselors are picking up school supplies for students in need to be given out before school starts. They say there are multiple students who have a hard time affording supplies every year and the school supply list seems to grow every year.
10 out of 12 elementary schools qualify for free lunch according to the Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation Executive Director Jodi Gillette. These supplies are donated or paid for by the foundation giving nearly 900 elementary school students the tools they need for a successful year.
"The need varies school by school depending on where the school is located and the students that feed into the school," said Joel Dechant, Paul Monro Elementary School counselor.
"We feel as though students are best prepared to learn when they have what they need for class, you're going to feel more confident, they're going to feel more excited and they'll be more engaged in what's happening in the classroom," said Gillette.
Lynchburg families can contact their school counselors to let them if there is a need. Each school counselor will give out the supplies before school starts. You can donate to the 10 Cares McDonalds School Supplies Drive now through August 7th. You will find more information in the WSLS 10 Back to School Headquarters section of WSLS.com
