DANVILLE (WSLS10) - The Danville River District Association is looking for an artist to paint the city's newest mural.

The mural will be painted on the side of the old tobacco warehouse, at the corner of Craghead St. and Loyal St.

This will be the city's third mural and will represent the history of the tobacco industry in the city.

"We would really like to get done before the end of the year preferably; get started around October," explained Jerry Amburn, chairman of the River District Association's mural committee.

The mural is part of the River District Association's effort to get the city state recognition, as a destination mural city.

"In order to achieve that goal, the first three murals had to be tied to a topic that was significant for that city," River District Association Executive Director Ernecia Coles said.

The other two murals depict the infamous 'wreck of the old 97' mail train just outside of the city in 1903, and the old streetcar system that used to run through downtown.

Interested artists are asked to submit their ideas to the River District Association by August 25th.

"From there, we'll go through the applications. If there is any that we can use, we have a scoring system that we'll go through to determine which one suits our needs," Amburn said.

He noted that the River District Association has raised around $20,000 for the mural, but the final cost will depend on which idea is eventually chosen.
