Pulaski's Hicks, George Wythe's Turner to Hall of Fame

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WSLS-10 SPORTS)- Eight new members have been selected to the 2016 Virginia High School Hall of Fame, including a pair of former SW Virginia standouts. This year's group is the 27th class inducted.

The Class of 2016 includes three athletes (Cornelious Cousins, Jr. - Hermitage HS; Heath Miller - Honaker HS; and Meg Turner - George Wythe-Wytheville HS); four coaches (Robin Dotson - Central-Wise HS; Tom Harding - Honaker HS; Joel Hicks - Pulaski County HS and Munro Rateau - Fluvanna County HS) and one contributor (B.J. Carroll - Galax HS).

Coach Joel Hicks led the Cougars for 24 seasons, winning 210 games. Coach Hicks won six region titles, 15 District Championships, had three state-runner-up finishes and the 1992 Division 6 State title. His Pulaski County teams won 10 or more games 10 times and reached the playoffs in 18 of 24 seasons. Hicks also spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator at West Virginia University. He was a three-time state coach of the year.

     Meg Turner set five state records while at the home of the Maroons-most points in a season, career, most rebounds in a career, best scoring average in a season and most free throws in a career. Turner was the first girl in Virginia history to surpass the 2.000 point mark as she became the state's leading scorer. As a senior she averaged 32.7 points per game and 14.4 rebounds per game. She also established five national records while in high school. She went on to be a two year starter at Vanderbilt University.

The 27th Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Charlottesville.
