Aryah Lipford's mom speaks out for first time since shooting

ROANOKE (WSLS10) - The community is coming together to remember Aryah Lipford. The toddler was shot and killed last year. Aryah's grandmother said she would have turned three years old this Sunday.

On Saturday the community honored her at Washington Park in Roanoke.

Aryah's mom, Rachel Quesenberry attended the celebration and is grateful the community is remembering her daughter.

"She was loving, she loved everybody she always loved to dance , her favorite song was the nae nae" Quesenberry said.

Quesenberry said she wants to see domestic violence to end.

"Domestic violence is not what you want to be in it's dangerous if you see any signs of it leave, cause you could lose your life, your child anybody," She said.

The event was organized by workers from Total Action for Progress or TAP.

Volunteers are working with other organizations like Blue Ridge Coalition Against Gun Violence.

"To let the community know that she is gone but she is not forgotten and we need to be aware of gun violence in the community," Kimberly Mitchell, with TAP said.

Representatives from Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence spoke at the celebration.

It's a non profit that pushes for gun violence prevention through policy and workers are offering support for Ayrah's family.

"Utilize whatever seeds they have planted in the memories and laughter of Aryah to plant a fruitful garden around them to make sure her name is in memory and not in vain," Kayla Hicks, with the organization said.

Roanoke Police said the man responsible for fatally shooting Aryah is Walter Hunter III.

Detectives said he was in prior relationship with Rachel.

Hunter is serving a life sentence for murdering Aryah.
