DUBLIN (WSLS 10) - Because of the high temperatures and dry conditions, Claytor Lake is in the middle of one of its worst fish kills in the last 20 years.
Wildlife leaders said hundreds of striped bass have been dying off since this past Saturday.
The weather conditions are causing a lack of oxygen at deeper water levels, which is where this type of fish typically survives.
They said it happens every few years, but this time around has been more severe.
Leaders have seen 25 to 35 dead fish a day since last weekend.
"We really promote recreational fishing on Claytor Lake," said Department of Game and Inland Fisheries manager Bill Kittrell. "To see really some trophy-sized fish turning up dead is very discouraging."
The kill is expected to last a few more days. It is not expected to create health concerns for lake visitors.
