What's News Today: July 21, 2016

(WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech hosts a conference today on teaching large classes. Educators attending will learn best practices and see research for teaching these classes. This is the second year for the conference.

Randy Hopkins will be in court today in Radford for arraignment. Police charged his with two misdemeanor counts of embezzlement of city funds. Hopkins is on leave pending from the city.

It's Free Tea Day at McAllisters. Today you can get a free 32 ounce tea just by showing up. The first 25 guest will get a free Tea Freak t-shirt. The Roanoke and Lynchburg stores are participating in the promotion.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia receives an $8,000 donation today from the Salem Walmart. The Walmart store recently took part in the Fight Hunger, Spark Change campaign. Earlier this year, stores allowed customers to buy certain products or make donations at the register. The Salem store placed first in the region for the sale of products and third for cash donations.

Health care and government leaders will come together to talk about the Roanoke Valley HOPE Initiative. It's a new community partnership combating substance abuse. The Bradley Free Clinic, Carilion Clinic and others will talk about what this program means for the community at 10 a.m.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation holds an invitation only showing of "611: American Icon, The Story of the Last Norfolk and Western Class J Steam Locomotive." The movie was directed by a Richmond filmmaker and follows the restoration process and its return to the rails. The film also talks about Roanoke's rail history and how the city grew into one of the hubs for the Norfolk and Western Railway.
