ACC announces agreement with ESPN to launch TV channel

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WSLS 10) - The days of searching for a channel carrying your favorite college team's game will soon be over.

The ACC announced on Thursday that it's launching its own television channel, which will feature local favorites Virginia Tech and U.Va.

The face of college athletics is evolving faster than you download the newest app.

For the ACC, a 24-hour-a-day broadcast network of its very own could not wait any longer.

"The new media agreement with ESPN that extends through 2035-36, also I could not be more pleased to stand before you today and say that this new agreement will include the launch of the ACC network and ACC Network Extra," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

The partnership with ESPN provides a digital network that launches next month, followed by the 24-hour cable network in 2019.

"I do feel like it's a differentiator, I know I'm repeating myself, but when you are a sole partner with ESPN and ABC and you don't have your rights all split up and you are solely on that platform with the worldwide leader it's great. So yes, you can survive without it, but I'm glad we don't have to find out," said Whit Babcock, the athletic director at Virginia Tech.

The digital network will offer 600 live events. The cable channel 400 more plus news and original programming.

The ACC becomes the fourth power conference to start a stand-alone channel following the SEC, Big 10 and Pac-12.
