MAGIC Camp: Girls get hands on exposure to carpentry

ROANOKE (WSLS10) - Local girls are learning how to build.

They are taking part in a three-day MAGIC Camp at Virginia Western Community College.

MAGIC stands for Mentoring A Girl In Construction.

Thursday, VWCC workforce instructors and Habitat for Humanity volunteers gave the girls hands on exposure to carpentry. The girls were taught how to use hand tools and measure.

"I think it's great for these girls," said Veronica Spradlin, a VWCC instructor. "When I was younger, I had a lot of guys taking tools out of my hands saying 'here just let me do it; I already know how to do it'. This is giving them and opportunity that's low pressure where they can pick up a tool and we'll show them how to use it."

"I like how everybody works together and they just get everything done quick," said Elizabeth Horine, an 8th grader at Staunton River Middle School.

This is the second year of the camp.
