Crews urge visitors to stay out of Cascades water

PEMBROKE (WSLS 10) - The Cascades trail in Giles County remained closed Monday after a man drowned there this weekend.

Authorities have not confirmed the man's identity, but they called him a hero.

Giles Rescue Squad members said he was swimming with his son when they both began to get pulled under the water and rocks. Then, the man threw his son to safety before going under himself.

NBC affiliate WVVA out of Bluefield, West Virginia, is reporting the victim was Chris Mounts of Rock, West Virginia.

A Virginia Tech student drowned at the falls on June 25.

"Our crews, from what I've been told, haven't been in years and years for a drowning," said Giles rescue captain Nathan Frazier. "So two in two weeks is extremely rare."

Forestry officials said they expect the trail to reopen by Tuesday afternoon.
