Dozens in Lynchburg pray for peace after deadly tragedies this week

LYNCHBURG (WSLS10) - People in Hill City are praying for peace after deadly tragedies this past week including five offices shot and killed in Dallas and the police-involved shooting deaths of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile who was shot by police in Minnesota.

About 40 people came to Miller Park in Lynchburg to pray with hopes of preventing violence in their own communities.

"I'm hoping that we can have peace," Timothy Hamlette, who attended the prayer service said.

Hamlette was shocked at what happened this week and, like so many others, are hoping to spread love.

"Praying to God is I think the one thing we can do and the best thing we can do is put it in his hands," he said.

The organizer of the event, BB Shavers said his goal is to unite all backgrounds in the community and to pray for everyone who was impacted by the shootings this week.

"it's unity, if you look around our nation right now you see people praying you see everybody come together for one cause, non violence, stop the murders so when we pray you have white kids, black kids people from all over," Shavers said.
