Public input sought for proposed Riverfront Park in Danville

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The American flags that make up Danville's Field of Honor covered the area across from the YMCA where the proposed Riverfront Park would be built on Thursday.

Four acres of land along the Dan River next to the White Mill building at the edge of downtown.

"[It] will support not only events downtown, it'll support the merchants and also the people who live downtown," Danville Parks and Rec Director Bill Sgrinia said.

The parks and rec department is, as of Thursday, in the process of creating a conceptual design for the park, which is why the department scheduled a public input meeting for Thursday night.

"A basketball court, swimming pool," Wade Thomas said when asked what he would like to see at the park.

Bryson McLaughlin agrees, but not just because it would be fun.

"All that stuff," McLaughlin said, referring to Thomas's wishes for the park. "For summer, summer time, to cool off, have fun, keep us out of trouble."

"A big swimming pool, a full-court basketball court just for the kids to do something when there's nothing to do at home or when the Y's closed," Jaylon Glass emphasized.

A swimming pool or some type of water park is a popular idea among many other residents, too.

Dozens of people have commented on the parks and rec department's Facebook page offering their thoughts, with the most common request being some type of water recreation.

One person wrote, "Splash style park area with maybe a canopy near for picnic tables and grills."

Another person wrote, "They need to put some kind of public swimming pool there so the kids and parents will quit playing in the fountain."

A dog park is another popular request.

Sgrinia says all options will be considered.

"We hope to present to city council in December what the concepts could be," Sgrinia explained.

After that, then the department will begin to figure out how much the park will cost and when work will begin.

Sgrinia added that the park will most likely be built in phases.
