A Virginia Tech team is headed back to Flint, Michigan, for the third round of water testing. Today, they will pack kits in Blacksburg to determine the current status of lead in water. The work is paid for by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The team returns later this month nine months after the switch to Detroit water and a state-supported flushing program. In addition to the high levels of lead there was an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in 2014-2015. The bacteria causes a type of lung infection leading to pneumonia otherwise known as Legionnaires' disease. It survives in soil and water and can multiply in water systems, such as hot tubs, air conditioners, and hot water heaters. The Virginia Tech team is testing water samples from water heaters in 30 Flint homes to evaluate the effects of cleaning the heaters with standardized protocols.
