ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - People driving through Southeast Roanoke may soon notice a unique piece of art. Volunteers started a mural near 13th Street and Route 24 across from the Arby's in Southeast Roanoke. Thousands of people drive by the area everyday, organizers said the location is a great place to have a welcoming display.

Once complete, the artwork will include an oak tree, flowing leaves, mountains and stars. Organizers said the mural represents the history, diversity and growth of the neighborhood.

"It's kind of a gateway. You are coming in and seeing a lot of Southeast as you are passing through. I thought it would be neat to see that as your entranceway," said Nicole Harris, neighborhood advocate for S.E. Roanoke.

Southeast Action Forum, Roanoke City Arts Council, Kenwood Neighbors, REACH and other groups are volunteering to paint the mural. It's expected to be complete later this week.
