Fireworks organizers keeping a close eye on the weather this July 4th

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A major feature for many families on the July 4th is the fireworks. The dazzling light show and the booming sounds were in jeopardy due to bad weather.

On Monday afternoon, crews from Pyrotecnico were preparing for the Roanoke City fireworks show. They said they were hoping to get a little break between the rain. Staff started setting up Sunday night and were able to drop the shells into the tubes before the rain started falling. Crews said they plan to use close to 1,500 shells - which they'll set off through an electric board.

"Moisture can effect the height a little bit. With low clouds you are not going to be able to see it quite as well" said James Irvy, Pyrotecnico. "But as long as everything is dry and you keep it covered up when it starts to rain, it's going to go up."

Irvy said even with rain, they can pull plastic over the fireworks and still set the fireworks off safely.
