First responders kick off safe driving campaign for 4th of July weekend

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - First responders look to cut down on traffic accidents and deaths this holiday weekend by kicking off a safe driving campaign.

The 4th of July weekend is known as one of the deadliest on the road. According to Roanoke County Police, several people across the Commonwealth lost their lives in accidents this time last year.

To keep people safe, officers are reminding drivers to be aware of road conditions.

"The thing to remember while traveling is to be courteous, be patient because there's going to be incidents that's going to cause backups," said Virginia State Police Sgt. Rick Garletts. "Don't do anything that will accentuate an incident. Let's try to be patient and caring, take your time and plan ahead."

Local departments said they have extra crews on stand-by in case of an emergency.
