Miss Teen USA Pageant Ditches Swimsuit Competition

WSLS 10 Staff – LAS VEGAS (WSLS 10) - The Miss Teen USA pageant is getting rid of the swimsuit portion of its competition.

The Miss Universe organization announced Wednesday that the pageant will replace the bathing suit section with an athletic wear competition.

Pageant organizers hopes the change will show support for feminism and equality, especially for the 51 younger contestants who are between the ages of 15 and 19.

"This decision reflects an important cultural shift we're all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which runs the Miss Teen USA pageant, said in a letter announcing the news.

Shugart said that the organization will continue to "evolve in ways that celebrate women's strength, confidence and beauty for years to come."

Reigning Miss Teen USA Katherine Haik released a statement applauding the change.

"This new direction for Miss Teen USA is a great way to celebrate the active lives that so many young women lead and set a strong example for our peers."

The swimsuit competition has long been a point of debate for women's rights activists and others who feel it's unnecessary for underage competitors

The change, first reported by USA Today, will be in place for this year's competition, held July 30 in Las Vegas.
