Liberty students volunteering time to help those in need in West Virginia

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (WSLS 10) - Students in Virginia are helping with the clean up efforts in White Sulphur Springs.

Melanie Brown is a student volunteer with LU Send. The student group at Liberty University helps support people in a time of need.

"They had this all one minute and now it's gone, I don't even know how they are going to rebuild it all and clean it all out," said Brown.

Brown is one of eight students cleaning out the basement of White Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

The team is removing everything, from chairs to tables, all the debris left from the flood.

Their work is allowing the church's pastor to grieve a loved one who died in the flood.

"Just trying to kind of finish out getting rid of the mud and everything. For now, we're kind of splitting up, still getting rid of the mud, but also cleaning up these rooms," explained Alex Bartz, a junior at Liberty.

The students are working with Southern Baptist Convention, a disaster relief organization, and have worked with the organization in other parts of West Virginia.

Workers with SBC are just glad to know students are volunteering to help others in West Virginia.

"Absolutely wonderful, it just blesses my heart to see young people getting involved and wanting to help people where they are," said Jim Messenger with SBC.

Other students are hoping people can eventually get back on their feet.

"We'd love to see this church open again and be a light to the West Virginia community" said Dillon Zegur, a Liberty student.

The students will return to Lynchburg on Friday evening.
