Christiansburg woman dies, man charged in I-81 crash

AUGUSTA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A 59-year-old Christiansburg woman died in a car crash early Sunday morning involving a drunk driver, according to state police.

The crash happened on Interstate 81 at mile marker 215 in Augusta County at about 4:55 a.m. Sunday.

Police say a 2016 Toyota Tundra was driving south in the northbound lanes of the highway when it hit head-on a northbound 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan.

Gina Hoang, of Christiansburg, the driver of the Volkswagen, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Toyota, 31-year-old Christopher S. Diehl, of Fishersville, Va., was not injured in the crash and was also wearing a seat belt.

Diehl has been charged with DUI and aggravated involuntary manslaughter.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Appomattox Division Crash Reconstruction Team.
