Infant found in duffle bag in Danville

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) -  A search warrant is shedding some light on the case of an infant found dead in a duffle bag in Danville over the weekend.

"It was quite shocking," said Richard Chandler, who lives next to 53 Schoolfield Dr., where, according to the warrant, the bag was found early Sunday morning.

Chandler says the people who stay at the home have only been there for a few weeks.

"Well," he said, "I thought they were kind of shy because I went to speak to them one time but they turned and walked away."

According to the search warrant, the home belongs to the mother of Shannon Browder. The warrant explains that Browder is the boyfriend of the infant's mother, 23 year old Vanessa Poteat, and that Poteat called Browder early Sunday morning asking for the duffle bag and some other items that were in the home.

That's when the infant was discovered.

"The area's quiet. Then, when I found out about this I'm, like, 'what in the world'," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

She added that as a parent herself the fact that so little is known right now about what happened makes her worry about her childrens' safety and makes her want to get to know her neighbors better.

"Sure, because I would want to know if there's somebody out to hurt somebody else's children," she emphasized.

She says what makes this incident even more shocking is that it seemed like the infant was being well taken care of.

"The one time that I had seen them go in, they had just gotten out of the car and they were going in. She looked like she was feeding him, so I didn't think anything about it. I just seen new people and wished them well," she recalled.

As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed and no arrests had been made.

In a news release late Thursday afternoon, The Danville Police Department confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and that the department investigates every unattended death as a homicide until facts and circumstances suggest otherwise.
