Residents continue calls for federal investigation of police-involved shooting death of Kionte Spencer

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A news conference was held Monday related to the officer-involved shooting death of 18-year-old Kionte Spencer.

The "Justice for Kionte Spencer Coalition" met with U.S Attorney for the Western District of Virginia John Fishwick on Monday. Organizers said they delivered a petition signed by nearly 300 people requesting a federal investigation.

Last month, the Roanoke County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office announced the officers involved in the shooting would not face criminal charges.

Police have not released the dash cam video or the names of the officers to the public. The coalition is calling for more transparency and a federal investigation of the case.

"What we are saying is practical," said Bernadette Brown, Justice for Kionte Spencer Coalition. "If you want no bias, you have to have an outside entity come in. You have nothing to hide besides that you look justified in your actions."

Police said the video shows Spencer gave them no choice but to shoot as he walked along route 419 with a pellet gun in his hand.
