Escaped Richlands inmate is back in jail

BUCHANAN (WSLS 10) - After escaping on June 9, a Southwest Virginia Regional Jail inmate is back in custody.

Timothy Lowe, 55, of Richlands, Va., is being held on one count of assaulting a corrections officer and one count of escape from custody by force.

Lowe was being transported from the jail to a medical appointment in Richlands on Thursday at about 9:15 a.m., when the officer pulled over to the side of Route 460 at to tend to the inmate. During the course of the stop, state police say Lowe attacked the officer and tried multiple times to take the officer's issued firearm. During the assault, Lowe ran away.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, officers with the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail and Virginia State Police immediately responded to the area to search for Lowe.

At about 8:30 p.m., a Buchanan County Sheriff's Deputy spotted a man fitting Lowe's description in the Buchanan County community of Harman. Lowe was taken into custody without further incident.

The officer was treated for minor injuries sustained in the assault.

Lowe's escape and assault on the officer are under investigation.
