Salem woman dies in I-81 motorcycle crash

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Multiple crashes on Interstate 81 caused delays in both directions on Monday morning, according to state police.

At mile marker 138 on the northbound side, police said a 2008 Honda VT750 was driving in the right lane when the driver lost control, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail.

The driver, Hazel Mae Underwood, 71, of Salem, died in the crash which happened at about 8:10 a.m., according to state police.

Police say Underwood was wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

On the southbound side, there were four motor vehicle crashes at the same mile marker, according to police

At one point, VDOT reported both the right lane and right shoulder are closed and backups were about 2.5 miles.

Traffic is now back to normal in both directions.
