William Byrd High School student spending senior year in Macedonia

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Roanoke County Junior won't be returning to William Byrd High School next year.

Jeremy Slater will travel to Macedonia in August. He will get credit for his senior year by going to an international school.  He was awarded the Kennedy Luther Youth Exchange and Study program scholarship. He applied with 2,000 to 3,000 others and 65 students across the country were selected after a lengthy application and interviews.

"I just want people to know this is the opportunity of a lifetime," said Slater. "You learn a lot about yourself, not only the culture and country over there but you learn about yourself and how you adapt to new experiences. So I think that's really valuable in this time and you're going into new experiences in college so you need to know how to adapt to those circumstances."

After a year overseas, he wants to study international business and Arabic. He hopes to go to Georgetown or UVA.

Luther encourages other students to apply. More information can be found online here.
