Susan G. Komen to host breast cancer symposium in Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -- Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge is bringing together a number of resources for its inaugural breast cancer symposium.

Thriving Through Breast Cancer, the newest event for the Virginia Blue Ridge chapter, is designed to offer information for anyone affected by breast cancer.

There are several sessions planned touching on topics like genetic testing, metastatic breast cancer, yoga and Look Good Feel Better, a program through the American Cancer Society.

Komen finds 16 women in this service region will be diagnosed with breast cancer each week. The symposium is also for everyone who may be touched by the disease.

"We want to make sure that we are educating breast cancer survivors, but also anyone affected by breast cancer whether it's a medical professional, a co-survivor or someone who just has a family history and they want to know more," said Executive Director Catherine Turner Warren.

Thriving Through Breast Cancer symposium is Saturday, June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Temple Emanuel in Roanoke.

Tickets are $25 and include a continental breakfast, boxed lunch, lectures and two workshops.

75 percent of net proceeds generated by the affiliate stay in the Blue Ridge region. The remaining 25 percent goes toward national breast cancer research.

Dr. Claire Dees, a professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Department of Hematology and Oncology will serve as guest speaker. Dees specializes in breast cancer and early phase clinical trials and will educate symposium attendees on new targeted therapies to treat metastatic breast cancer.
