Roanoke Police: 11-year-old shot, killed by 10-year-old while playing with gun

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Roanoke City Police say an 11-year-old boy is dead after being shot by a 10-year-old boy on Thursday afternoon.

The 11-year-old graduated from Westside Elementary School on Thursday.

At 12:18 p.m., police responded to a home the 2000 block of Carroll Avenue NW to investigate a shooting.

The preliminary investigation indicates the two boys found access to a handgun inside home and were playing with it when the 10-year-old shot the 11-year-old.

The 11-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The 10-year-old boy called 911 after the shooting.

Police say that at this time, it appears that no one else was present inside home when this incident took place.

Detectives are continuing to conduct interviews and evidence technicians continue to collect and analyze evidence.

No charges have been placed at this time. Further evaluation of potential charges, if any, will be discussed with the Commonwealth Attorney after all interviews are conducted and all physical evidence is analyzed.

The investigation remains on-going.
