SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS 10) - A new postcard is using license plates to celebrate Smith Mountain Lake's 50th Anniversary.

The postcard costs $1 and are for sale at the SML Visitors Center at Bridgewater Plaza. All proceeds benefit a community effort to establish a large community facility for education, community meetings, and other civic activities. The project is being led by a group of community leaders, including Jim Laseter, Lori Smith, Marty Bowers, and Troy Keaton. The leadership group also includes Vicki Gardner, the executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Al Fuzi and Brian Raub, two local residents, created the "50 Plates" postcard and printed 1,000 of them, hoping to raise $1,000 for the center. Fuzi scouted for plates and took the photos, while Raub processed and arranged the photos on the postcard.

Raub said if the first thousand postcards sell out, and they can find another 50 lake-related license plates and will issue a second postcard. Plates must include the letters SML, some version of LAKE or something clearly related to Smith Mountain Lake. The plate cannot include initials.

Custom license plates are available for purchase at the Virginia DMV. To submit your license plate for the postcard, you can email a photo to Brian@Raub.net.
