Roanoke Valley organizations work to reduce stigma of mental illness

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - People in the Roanoke Valley are working to find solutions to mental illness. This week, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine continued its "Mini Medical School" series on mental health. Doctors are teaming up with local agencies to remove the stigma around mental health and discuss possible solutions.

Jeff Leonard is a mental health advocate who overcame his battle with mental illness and substance abuse. He now works with various organizations including "On Our Own Roanoke Valley" to increase awareness about treatment options. Staff at On Our Own use their personal experiences and training to help others. Executive Director Robin Hubert said she battled depression for years.

"Everyone who works here and everyone who has direct contact with our folks who come in," said Hubert. " They have recovery from a mental illness, significant recovery."

The non-profit has operated for more than 20 years. Recovery specialists said they have seen an increased need for the free services offered. Last year, the nonprofit worked about 6,000 cases which is a steady increase over previous years said Hubert.

"They don't have to have a referral so they will come to use because we are here and available right away," Hubert said. "Other places they have to wait for an appointment to get in."

Staff said increasing awareness about mental health services and removing the stigma is key to building a healthier community.

"The evidence is that folks who get peer services and get support like this on a daily basis tend to not go the emergency room as much and to not be admitted to the hospital as much and that saves a lot of money," said Hubert.

By sharing his personal story with mental health support groups across Virginia, Leonard said hopes to shed light on mental illness and provide a road to recovery for others.

"There is a way out," said Leonard. "I will tell people that I am here to hold your hand while you go through your journey."

On Thursday, May 26, staff at "On Our Own Roanoke Valley" are teaming up with police officers as well as medical professionals to raise awareness about mental health issues. They are taking part in the final session of the VTC "Mini Medical School". The program runs from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
